Thanks to everyone who attended the bookstore’s anniversary celebration! We had a great day surrounded by friends. We also had a fun visitor at the bookstore last week — a woman from California who is distantly related to the namesake of our town, Cornelius Bushnell. She was excited to hear the story behind our village and she took home a Bushnell t-shirt as a memento. Connie Hottell would like to thank everyone who helped look for her dog on Independence Day — she is grateful to have him back....

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Shirley Wiggin read a page from a book written by Loretta Jewell about Hereford. It was communion this week and the congregation burned their burdens and took communion. The sermon title was “Living Calmly.” Fear is gripping our country. Eighty percent of Americans are under stress. John 14:25-27 tells us that the Holy Spirit brings peace. If we will trust in God and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, we will have peace. Never for...

Good morning Banner County, neighbors and friends. I am hoping that your 4th of July celebration was a great one. Our bunch enjoyed fireworks compliments of the folks at LaGrange. They always do a nice job and this year was better. A big ‘Thank You’ to them. Bridgeport had rodeos and fireworks and fireworks were exploded by all of our neighboring towns as well. All of this in celebration of our freedom, which we tend to take for granted sometimes. I was recently in an area of Missouri that is...

Happy Fourth of July! Rodeos, fireworks, and food. Celebrating our freedom and remembering those who have fought to keep us free. I hope you have a super day, all red, white and blue. No fireworks fires, please! Last week a very special lady, long time Harrisburg resident, Dona Buchanan who now resides at the Kimball Manor, celebrated her 82nd birthday. She was surprised by some of her friends from Harrisburg and treated to a little party at the Dairy Queen. In on the surprise were Bev Faden,...

Happy Fourth of July! May each burst of color in the sky remind you how great our country is. And think how odd it would be to eat fish and chips today instead of hot dogs and apple pie. The community center will be closed July 6 for the entire day to do the wedding celebration of Steven Johnson and his bride Amanda Langlois. Congratulations! Tim Malm’s book is out on the shelves of local libraries and book stores. What an inspiration he has been for so many. I quickly paged through it while w...

The message at the Hereford Community Church this week was “Hope” — God is a god of hope. When you have hope, you are trusting God. Hope is the anchor of the soul. Luke 2:22-35 tells the story of Simeon. God promised Simeon that he would not die before he had seen Christ the Lord. Simeon held on to that hope for many years. When Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to the temple, God told Simeon to go to the temple. Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms and praised God, because God had fulfi...

Last week I referred to our weather conditions as “a roller coaster ride”. Boy, if I had only known how true that was going to be a few days later. Definitely not a good time either. Torrents of rain, hail, and worst of all high winds that did unbelievable damage in a fairly short amount of time; it hit Banner County over the course of two nights and will take much more time than that for folks to repair all of the damage. Some of the damage is irreparable, crops, but most is thankfully windows,...

Known both as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941; however the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-1783). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle created a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration...

We are entering this week with one left in the month of June. Unbelievable. I feel the summer slipping by and I really don’t want that! Waking up Monday felt like being in a fairy world with so much fog we couldn’t see across the yard. No wind which was a break for the flowers, and me too! Our calendar here at home is not quite so busy and I am thankful for that. My granddaughter attended Camp Judson last week and I was fortunate enough to be able to go for the last two days. What a great exp...

Drinks will be provided. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join the fun. You never know how great your town is until they come to your rescue. The Hereford Community Church celebrated fathers on Sunday and the fathers chose the hymns. Steve Hauer sang “My Dad Is Watching Me” for the special. The sermon title was “Dad, I’m Following You.” Pastor Opdycke stressed to fathers that your children are watching you. Fathers need to teach by example. Lead your children as Jesus leads you. You are not alone in this life. God is with you. Psalm 78:1-8 tells us that we learned from our ancestors and we are to teach the next generation about God...

Good morning to folks in Banner County and to our neighbors! Beautiful weather that we have been having, it has warmed right up. Nice rain we received this past Saturday but, it would have been a little bit nicer if it had rained about 4 hours earlier. It started in just before the Fun Run during Historical Day and every one of the competitors were completely soaked. Not a one of them stopped though, as far as I know. The day continued to run a roller coaster type of weather pattern all day,...
