For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Amy and Renee Martin sang “I Surrender All.” The sermon title was “Where’s Timbuktu?” Timbuktu is a city of 32,000 people in Mali, Africa. It was the center of Islam for trade and scholarship from 1300 until 1800 when the French took control. It would not be a place where Christians are welcome. Before Jesus was taken up into heaven, he gave commandment for his followers to take the gospel to all people. Missions are in God’s hea...

However, some deaths hit us harder than others. Maybe because we will miss the quick smile, the loving support and interest in our lives, or maybe because we get used to seeing their friendly face at lunch or at church. Helen Peters, 91, passed away Saturday. She was a bright light to her family, church and communi...

Wow! Can you believe this weather? Monday morning we had exactly one inch of rain in the gauge, and more throughout the week. I know the area farmers appreciate it and so do all of the trees we have recently planted. I hope it does this off and on until harvest. One day last week Joe went out to do chores and found a huge bull snake draped across the back of the golf cart. He peddled pretty fast back to the house, and I didn’t blame him one bit. I went out to make sure it wasn’t a rattler and...

Good morning to you all! It was good to see, those of you who were able, out and about this past Saturday, as Harrisburg celebrated it’s 125th year as a County. The weather was fairly nice, little too much wind, but at least the rain held off. It was great to see a few new entries in the parade, I hope they plan to participate again next year! It was also good to see the teenage crowd attempt to be involved as they brought out the ‘dunk tank.’ However, it was disappointing that they were unnec...

On June 25, 1987, President Ronald Reagan began a presidential proclamation with the words “More and more Americans are discovering a uniquely American food delicacy — farm-raised catfish.” June 25 is National Catfish Day. It’s a day to enjoy fishing and some tasty fried catfish, or catfish cooked with your favorite recipe. My family loves to go fishing! We will no doubt enjoy National Catfish Day along the banks of Oliver Lake. The bounty of our fishing trip will be saved for a family fish fry on July 4. Summer Reading Celebration is underwa...

Congratulations to the Morrison family and we all hope they had a safe trip and made lasting memories. The first baseball games for the Wildcats were this past week. The little sluggers showe...

In honor of Father’s Day the fathers chose the hymns at the Hereford Community Church this week. For the special Kathy Zitek read a story from Guideposts about a veteran dad. Pastor Opdycke centered the service around fathers. She read several scriptures that tell the roll of fathers concerning their children. The Lord nurtures the child through the parents. Proverbs 13:24 says “If you love your children, you will correct them.” Children mimic their parents, so be a godly example. Next week...

The Pine Bluffs Town Council approved a few items June 2 that may help improve the town of Pine Bluffs. Father’s Day is upon us. It’s that day when we try to tell those big, burly, noisy (or small, skinny, quiet) men how much they mean to us. It may not be a father by blood or marriage that you honor this weekend. It may be a man who looks after you. Fixes your trailer hitch, it helps you connect a propane tank when you can’t figure it out. Or maybe it is a man who puts your son’s prosthetic foot back on his fake leg. For all those men in our lives, we say, Happy Father’s Day. Fish, golf, gri...

Historical Day will begin June 14, with a pancake feed at the fire hall at 7 a.m., followed by a fun run at 7:30 a.m. The barbecue cook-off will get started at 9 a.m. a...

  • Burns Day

The fog didn't stop residents and visitors from enjoying Burns Day held on Saturday. The foggy day started with a pancake breakfast served by the Burns Fire Department. Seating was available inside the fire house. The fire fighters bought eight 10-pound bags of pancake mix. One at a time, they put a bag of mix in a bin, added water and mixed it with a giant drill. The fire department has served breakfast every year since 1907. Annette Beavers, President of Woman's Association, said about 2,000...

  • Hardware store continues to lumber

    Allie Hurley|Jun 5, 2014

A hardware store that contributed to the development of Pine Bluffs is going out of Business. Lipps Lumber and Hardware's last day of business will be on Saturday, June 7. Lipps' only store is in Pine Bluffs. The business provided parts to clients in town as well as surrounding areas. When Lipps opened five years ago, it was a booming store because Pine Bluffs had a good housing market. But after the housing went down, it wasn't enough to carry the business. "It's not paying to stay open,"...

About 40 years ago, Alyce Krakow was sending her children to school. Living out in the country, far out, the school district gave the Krakow’s two options; drive a bus or drive their children to meet the closest bus. Alyce choose the job opportunity and has no regrets. “They were paying for the fuel and transportation and giving me a paycheck, so I don’t think it was a bad deal.” Alyce had a grandson of one of her first students on her bus this year, and realized just how fast 40 years goes by...

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Carol Opdycke read “Renew Your Character” from her devotional. The sermon title was “The Old Lamplighter.” A person would walk along the street in the evening and light the street lights. Ephesians 5:6-20 tells us to live as people of light. Just as the lamplighter left a trail of light behind him, we should leave a trail of light behind us as we tell others about Jesus and show our love by our good deeds. Next week the sermon topic w...
