This week I would like to express sympathy to Carroll and the family of Geneva Mathews who passed away a week ago Monday. She was a sweet lady and a longtime resident of Banner County. It is still very cold, which is definitely Not news to any of you. However, it is also not as severely bitter cold as it was a few days ago. With February a thing of the past I was looking at the Farmer’s Almanac and thinking about this business of March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb. There was no doubt in my mind that it came in like a lion, I...

In case you planned to use your get-out-of-winter-now card, save it. Spring has not sprung, yet. It seems we just melt enough to see the drift from Thanksgiving and another round of the white stuff drops in. You won't hear me complaining. Similar to me telling the little guys to enjoy their youth as they are only a child for 15 years. After that, you can act like a child but you will never be one again. Winter only comes around once a year. After that, we have to show off the body that we "gaine...

Baby it’s COLD outside! again. or still. We have at least 8 inches of the fluffy white stuff laying about. Church services at the Harrisburg Community Church were cancelled due to poor road conditions. Roads were pretty much a mess everywhere over the weekend, and hopefully will improve as our week moves along. School had a 10 o’clock late start Monday for the same reason. I don’t think it is supposed to be much warmer though. Banner County students are finished with wrestling for the seaso...

Stop by the Burns Branch Library and check out our Dr. Seuss display to celebrate his birthday. Here is a brief biography about Dr. Seuss I found at www.biography.com: “Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Mass. He published his first children’s book, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, under the name of Dr. Seuss in 1937. Next came a string of best sellers, including The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. His rhymes and characters are beloved by gene...

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church Steve Hauer sang “I Pledge Allegiance To The Lamb” and showed the corresponding video. The sermon topic was “Gideon”. Judges 6 through 8 tells the story of Gideon. God chose Gideon, a simple farmer, to defeat the Midianites who had invaded Israel. With God’s help, one person can defeat the enemy. God sees us not for what we are, but He sees what we can become with His help. After the worship service, the congregation enjoyed a potluck d...

Hello Banner County and friends! Does anyone have any tumble weeds? If you are missing any, I think they might be at my place. For once though I have appreciated the wind ... drying out the mud. March weather is just around the corner. Banner County School was dismissed several days last week for various reasons, winter break, and an In-Service day and Curriculum Day for the teachers. However several sports activities continued throughout the week and as of now the varsity wrestling competition...

Please contact the village office if you are interested in helping. Sam Gingerich is starting a new list of trees to be removed. Please contact the vil...

Spring looks like it might be on its way. I know, you may not be able to see it through the snow drifts or have time to look as you dam up the water. But it is coming. Many Springs ago, a family welcomed a pink bundle of joy. Today we have the good fortune of having her in our community and counting her as a friend. Happy Birthday, Helen Peters! May your day be as bright and lively as the joy you bring us. The Albin Town Council met Thursday evening. Mayor Kelly Krakow said the town will buy a...

That little rodent over in Pennsylvania was scared Sunday by his shawdow and went back to sleep for another six weeks. Maybe he was a Broncos fan and predicted a nasty day on the field. It was still a good game to watch, seeing Percy Harvin get to run back a touchdown in a Super Bowl. Something he never would have got to do with the Vikings. Now, on to the madness of basketball for a while. A bit of news from the Albin Elementary halls: Arizona school districts, including the Dysart Unified... Full story

Good morning! It has been cold outside. By the look of it it will continue to be this way for awhile yet. I did not give one thought to the amazing Pennsylvania Phil, the weather predicting groundhog last week. Sunday came and with it reminders of him. One quote I seen by Maxine said “Super Bowl on Groundhog’s Day, count on winter going into six weeks of overtime.” That is another one that slipped my mind, the super bowl. Guess you can say my favorite part of that is the Clydesdales. And to qu... Full story

Good morning to all, and congratulations for NOT blowing away completely! Man has the wind ever been at it’s best. We have been plagued by tumbleweeds, like everyone else I imagine, but yesterday I seen some at a house in a corner space where they were about to reach the roof. Maybe at that point they would begin to blow over the house. At least we do not have them stacked that high anywhere at our house, not yet anyway. The wind has been a challenge to our patience, that is for sure. Here at h...

The wind continues to blow. No, really. I thought this weekend we would come out from behind the wind break but we just got more wind to break through. Advice for the week; don’t spit into the wind. Those pesky tumbleweeds are more than an eye sore. They can cause fires and block roads. Try to take care of the ones that whirl your way. Our condolences go out to Jason and Jillian McLaughlin as they mourn the loss of her aunt in South Dakota. Loss is never easy, especially when it is unexpected a... Full story

Hope you all survived the dust storms this week! The wind definitely added to the piles of tumbleweeds around town. The monthly village board meeting was postponed again. It has not yet been rescheduled. My condolences go out to both the Halligans and the Hackbarths for the deaths in their families. The bookstore is currently open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The weather, for January, isn't really that bad. Sure, it's cold. And the driveway drifts shut every afternoon. But those warm mild days are really nice and make the in-between days brr-able, I mean bearable. The Smith family received a pretty cool gift bag filled with sweets, treats and movies from Cody and Shawnae Branigan and family. It was such a nice surprise and was consumed and watched immediately. Thank you, Branigans! The Wyoming Wheat Growers Association met at the Albin Community... Full story

Good mooring Banner County! Is there anyone out there that is confused as to what month this is? One day it is January for sure and the next day it may feel like March or April. April is my month of choice — only 75 days — whoo -hoo. Although we are lacking in snow, we sure have had plenty of wind and tumble weeds. Something new that needs to be mentioned is the annual reunion of the Gulick sisters. They had their 35th annual Christmas dinner at Janett and Harold Connour’s in Cheyenne. Those... Full story

For the special this week at the Hereford Community Church, Steve Hauer sang “Be The One.” The sermon topic was “Mega-Faith” and the scripture was Mark 7:1-30. Jesus was confronted by some Pharisees who wanted to know why his disciples didn’t obey all their religious rules. Jesus told them it was more important to obey God’s rules. Then Jesus traveled to the city of Tyre where he was confronted by a Greek woman who begged him to force a demon out of her daughter. Because of her mega-faith... Full story

The Community Giving Tree located at the Wyoming Bank and Trust was a huge success. A total of 33 gifts were given. For the special Karel Smock read “The Internet Night Before Christmas.” The sermon topic was “O Come Let Us Adore Him.” Pastor Opdycke read Matthew 2:1-12 which is the story of the wise men who came to worship Jesus.
