  • Lady Broncs win by 1

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 27, 2014

Games are sometimes about more than who wins or loses. Coming into the Hornets nest for senior night, the Lady Broncs knew more emotion than normal would be on the sleeves of Pine Bluffs fans and players. And emotions, like home field advantage can help win a game. But Burns struggled through a points deficit most of the game and keep their emotions in check. Rylee Anderson, meeting the forehead of Andrea Baker, was out for the rest of the game. Neither team was going to give up or give in. A...

  • Becoming better by wasting time

Zachary Laux, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 20, 2014

My friends and family often see playing video games as a waste of time. "Quit playing that thing and go play outside," My mom and dad would often say to me in my early years of gaming as I was playing Mario on my original Nintendo. My friends and siblings also became agitated with me on days I couldn't put the controller down. "Come on, let's go play outside," My two brothers and sister would say to me as I played through the game "Glover" on my Nintendo 64. Throughout the years of me playing...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Feb 20, 2014

Pine Bluffs Friends and family,Thank you so much for your support this past holiday season. It felt like every one from town came to see 'Its A Wonderful Life.' It meant a lot to me. This last weekend the Cheyenne Little Theatre opened its production of Barefoot In The Park. Directed by Jim Rolf. He has done such a great job with directing this show. I play the part of the telephone repair man Harry Pepper. A beautiful and challenging roll. My good friend Mark Plante makes a brief but...

  • 'Let your love show, it's the season'

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 13, 2014

I like humming a tune. Sometimes I don't even realize I am singing. Once, I guess I was getting a little carried away and some lady told me I "must be really happy today." I took it as a slam, as she was casting crusty looks at me like I was bread that needed to be baked. I told her I wasn't particularly happier than any other day and apologized for singing. I apologized for singing. One of those regrets that don't mean much more than principal. But no one should ever apologize for having a... Full story

  • Thoughts for the week

    Feb 13, 2014

“When the conduct of men is designed to be influenced, persuasion, kind, unassuming persuasion, should ever be adopted. It is an old and a true maxim, that a “drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall.” ~ Abraham Lincoln “Most folks are as happy as they make their minds up to be.” ~ Abraham Lincoln “My wife is as handsome as when she was a girl, and I…fell in love with her; and what is more, I have never fallen out.” ~ Abraham Lincoln “Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire, called conscience.” ~ Ge...

  • Legislature readies for fast paced session and budget decisions

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Feb 6, 2014

Budget session, Representative John Eklund says, it is a fast paced session. It is a faster moving session in the biennium and he prefers a slower pace. "It is really hard to break away from the budget and there is a lot on the floor to decide," Eklund says. Sixty-seven bills are starting on the house side with 70 making their way through the Senate side of the capitol. "I am trying a bill that will put responsibility for determining school safety for firearms with the school boards," Eklund...

  • Letter to the Editor: Plowing disturbing but necessary

    Feb 6, 2014

Dear Residents of Pine Bluffs: Sorry if while I was plowing out a certain church’s parking lot, handicap and old people’s driveways, that I have disturbed you and your sleep. I am sorry but sometimes there just isn’t enough time in the day to meet YOUR schedule and if more people were out with shovels I would not need to start so early helping the needy. Again, I do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused to you or to PB2 who had to get out of bed and come tell me to stop helping people at 5:30 a.m. I guess that means... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Rude interviews rub the wrong way

    Feb 6, 2014

Editor: It is our opinion the KWGN Channel 5 should not allow Robert Geha to interview anyone. Most of the time he is obnoxious, inconsiderate, rude and antagonistic. Half of the time he doesn’t even have prepared questions to ask the person he is interviewing. He appears to believe that asking insulting questions make up tough interviews. We have called the station before to complain about his insulting and rude behavior but it just seems to go on and continue. Anthony Keith and Sheera Poelman do a fine job of interviewing without u... Full story

  • The good and bad of silence

    Charlene Smith|Jan 30, 2014

Many of us in Wyoming know what real silence sounds like. There are still places in our county where you can’t even hear the hum of a power line or water pump. Take a stroll down most of our community streets after dark and it is as peaceful as a child resting. Recently, when a child was resting, a tragedy woke him. Through the silence he heard what he had to do. Rescue his family. This is just what the altruistic eight-year-old did in upstate New York. He didn’t hear the danger, he only heard t... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Wyoming resident concerned for WLRC

    Jan 30, 2014

My aunt has profound disabilities and is medically fragile. She lived at home and received services from the local community programs until she was 33 years old, at which time she moved to the Wyoming Life Resource Center. Our family is in a unique position as we have experienced the Medicaid Waiver program, community programs, and residency at the WLRC. Wyomingites with developmental disabilities have wide ranging needs. One size does not fit all. Funding for the Wyoming Life Resource Center’s operations and renovations AND community p... Full story

  • Feeling welcome in a strange land

Zachary Laux, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 23, 2014

Coming into a new community can be a scary thing. It was for me when I came to Pine Bluffs just recently. I didn’t know anything about this area. I didn’t know what the people would be like. The uncertainty caused me a little anxiety, at first. But it didn’t last long. Why? Because your community is well represented. When I first arrived to Pine Bluffs and wrote my first column, people soon started greeting me in the street. That’s always nice, but my first impression of this community will al... Full story

  • Post Editorial: Cheer your team to a win

    Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 23, 2014

Early into a midwinter Friday evening, the cold darkness doesn't black out the car lights forming a convoy up to local schools in rural southeast Wyoming and northern Colorado. The destination is the week's home basketball game. It's a time to socialize, reconnect and warm up from the cold. It's a chance to eat the comfort food of high school concession stands. But most important, It's a time to come and support your student athletes and cheer them to a win. It doesn't seem to matter if the... Full story

  • Signs say 'Move on'; good things to come

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 16, 2014

Have you heard the story about the Baptist minister, Catholic priest and Lutheran pastor who go fishing together? I had better prefix this by saying I am a Lutheran. Thereby casting away any notion of an inappropriate story, just a light hearted story. They get hungry and the Baptist minister says, “Oh, the ladies group made us a nice lunch, let me go get it.” He jumps out of the boat, walks across the water to his truck, grabs the lunch bag and returns across the water. A little while lat... Full story

  • Thought for the week

    Jan 16, 2014

"We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward." ~ Martin Luther King Jr. "Never, never be afraid to do what's right,...

  • Feeling safe driving

    Zachary Laux|Jan 9, 2014

I like to believe We all have a place where we feel safe and comfortable — a sanctuary. That place can be as simple as your living room or as complex as a fallout shelter. Granted, I think most of us would feel safe in a fallout shelter under the right circumstances, but my point is, I think most people define their sanctuary as a place — a stationary place that does not move. I don’t look at it that way. For me, a sanctuary is a state of mind, not a place at all. I guess you could say my perso... Full story

  • A trip to warmer weather

    Bill Sniffin|Jan 9, 2014

Ever since most of Wyoming got pelted with that first snowstorm in September, I have been itching to get to a warmer climate. On Dec. 30, we climbed into our nine-year old motorhome (aptly named FollowMyNose) and started our slog southward. We earlier got eight inches of new snow. South Pass reports kept claiming chains were required and heavy fog was making traveling dangerous. In other words, be careful. And in additional other words, do not attempt crossing this mountain pass in a 55-foot... Full story

  • Post Editorial: Christmas lights are not dimmed by contest

    Jan 9, 2014

We received a phone call regarding the Christmas Light Decoration Contest and the houses selected as the “winners.” The caller felt that Greg Phillips, 1279 N. Main St. “did a heck of a job” with his lights and display and felt the Pine Bluffs Post “missed out.” The Christmas Light Decoration Contest is an annual contest sponsored by the Pine Bluffs Recreation Department. The Pine Bluffs Post only covers the contest and does not determine who wins. For nine years, Pine Bluffs residents have been encouraged to decorate their homes within city... Full story

  • That was the year that was . . . A look back at 2013 in Wyoming

    Bill Sniffin, www.billsniffin.com|Jan 2, 2014

As 2013 winds down, it makes sense to look back at what kind of items were featured in this statewide column. Funniest item I wrote about in 2013 was the California woman calling the Fremont County Sheriff's office and complaining about how much cleavage was being shown by their female deputies. Since Sheriff Skip Hornecker has only one female deputy patrolman, this was a big mystery until it was determined the gal had been watching the TV show Longmire. The female lead on that show is blond... Full story

  • Just darn bad luck

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Jan 2, 2014

Christmas is such a wonderful holiday. Most of us get to spend a little time with family and loved ones. We get to step out of the daily life of stress, reality of debt, sickness, and hardships and sit for a while in the warm room of happiness, joy and love. Sometimes, fate leaves the door open to that beautiful room and reality slips in like smoke leaves the chimney. The reality is no room or family is immune to bad luck, during Christmas or any other day for that matter. Life can sure be...

  • Getting papers to customers brings satisfaction

    Zachary Laux|Dec 26, 2013

I get a lot of satisfaction out of writing. I like gathering information and flowing it into what will hopefully become a nice narrative, news story or whatever I am writing. But the most satisfaction I get out of writing is watching a project all come together. The first newspaper job I had was at a small daily in Rawlins. My beat was the Rawlins area and the Rawlins Town Council. All I was ever required to do was write stories daily and hand them to my editor. After that stage, I left for the...

  • Stones and life preservers both cause ripples

    Charlene Smith|Dec 26, 2013

Have you ever experienced something so beautiful it made you cry? Could have been a simple act of kindness or seeing a loved one after a long separation. Or perhaps hearing voices sing so sweetly you think you have gone celestial. This time of the year, there are many moments that bring the joyful tears to my eyes. Anytime I hear “Silent Night,” a choir hitting all the right notes in a Christmas program, and little children shyly talking to Santa Claus, I empty the tear bank. I am no cream puf... Full story

  • Last minute Christmas thoughts . . .

    Bill Sniffin www.billsniffin.com|Dec 19, 2013

There are many groups of people in Wyoming who could use a little nudge of assistance at this time of year. Two types that come to mind are the under-employed and the unemployed. The former are the folks who serve us our food at the neighborhood restaurant or the guy or gal at the counter of the local convenience store or working at a myriad of odd jobs all around us. The dispositions of these folks are amazing. In the face of daunting financial difficulties, they still go to work and they keep everything going. Modern-day Christmas is... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Donations bring Christmas joy to children

    Dec 19, 2013

Editor, This week we are wrapping up our Buddy Bucks program which is a program for less fortunate children in our community. We have been amazed at the generosity of our staff, our parents and more importantly our students. This week in hopes to get the students more involved we decided to do a “Mad Minute”. Each day this week at the beginning of the school day we counted down from 60 and passed around baggies for the students to fill with coins, cash, and sometimes checks from parents and staff. Our totals from the week have pro...

  • Post Editorial: Post Editorial: Christmas concerts fun and important for education

    Dec 19, 2013

The amount of energy and creativity that goes into the multiple school Christmas concerts and plays does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. The number of people who attend these school-sponsored events is proof of that. But these concerts are not only entertaining for our communities, they also help students learn and develop. The programs encourage our students to be creative, and even help them to think critically. Most importantly, these concerts help pull students out of their comfort zones, an important part of any child’s development. C... Full story

  • Now, may the peace that surpasses all understanding be yours

Charlene Smith, Pine Bluffs Post staff|Dec 12, 2013

In church on Sunday, Pastor reminded us that, although this is a joyous season and we should celebrate, it is also a season of repentance and forgiveness. Who wants to think about past digressions and apologizing when there are gifts to be bought, wrapped and given. Parties to attend and food to eat. Oh, the food. But this is not about the frosted cookies of life. This is about the spinach. The green beans and brussels sprouts of life. Some may like the taste of spinach, but I would be willing... Full story
