  • Broncs record even after Winter Classic

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 17, 2015

Whenever you play host to several guests, you will have your share of those who are just happy to be invited, and those who are there to leave with the deli tray. Such was the case for the Burns Broncs who hosted the Burns Winter Classic December 10-12. At the end of the weekend, the host team found their record split at 2-2 to start the season, proving there were some gracious invitees and some spoilers in the mix. Moorcroft The Broncs got off to a winning start by downing the Moorcroft Wolves...

I am fortunate and incredibly blessed to have been recognized. That being said, this is only a reflection of the outstanding team we have and the girls ran their butts off. Our team is a co...

  • Lady Broncs win a pair, lose a pair

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 17, 2015

The Burns Lady Broncs hosted several teams across the state this past weekend for the Burns Winter Classic. It was a see-saw schedule that saw the Lady Broncs win, lose, win and lose to even their record at 2-2 to start off the 2015-16 season. Moorcroft The Lady Broncs started play last Thursday against the Lady Wolves from Moorcroft. It was touch and go for a while, but when the clock hit zero, the Lady Broncs had their first win of the year, beating Moorcroft 32-14. Jessica Malm led the Lady...

  • Lady Coyotes winless so far

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 17, 2015

Injuries and lack of a bench are putting the Pawnee Lady Coyotes in a bit of a predicament early in the 2015-16 season. "This season, we are a very young team of six total, but currently playing with only five players," said Coach Megan Malcom. "Having no subs is a pretty big obstacle, add to that we have girls that have never played basketball before." Last Friday, the Lady Coyotes visited Peetz to play the Lady Bulldogs. The first half was all Peetz as the Lady Bulldogs took a 17-2 lead in...

  • Coyotes struggle early

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 17, 2015

The Pawnee Coyotes boys basketball team is struggling in the early going of the 2015-16 season, with a record of 1-4 so far on the year. Pawnee opened the season at home hosting Dayspring Christian Academy on December 1. The Coyotes tried to get their rhythm at the start but the Eagles took an early 15-2 lead in the first and never looked back. DCA led 29-12 at halftime. The Coyotes tried to keep pace in the second half but were outscored 15-11 in the third and 19-16 in the fourth to take the 63-39 loss to start the season at 0-1. Next up was a...

  • Hornets look forward to solid season on the court

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

After posting a 22-2 record and finishing third at state last season, the Pine Bluffs Hornets are not dwelling on the past and are only focused on having the best 2015-16 season they can put together. “For us, we are only concerned about this season,” said Coach Will Gray. “Last year, the kids did a great job competing but the season didn’t end the way we wanted it to. Last year is in the past and we know a new season will bring new challenges thrown at us. We are excited to face those challenges and compete each and every night.” This will...

  • Lady Hornets look to build on last season

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

Going into her fourth season as Lady Hornets head coach, Lindsey Forbes knows there are challenges ahead for her squad. But, she feels if the team can stay focused and play the fundamentals, the Lady Hornets will have another productive year on the hardwood. “We have a strong group of upperclassmen who will build on last season and lead our freshmen and sophomores,” said Forbes. “Last year we were 17-5, but we had a disappointing finish and did not make the state tournament.” Forbes also said the opponents for the Lady Hornets will be competi...

  • Grapplers prepare to hit the mat

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

Coach Dan Clayson believes the Burns/Pine Bluffs wrestling team is shaping up well for the upcoming season. “I think it’s going to be an exciting year,” he said. “We got some experience back from last year. We have four returning state-placers, so we’ll be OK. Some of our kids have put in the work over the past few years, and they’re starting to see the results of that hard work.” Clayson added experience will be the core of the team’s performance for 2015-16. “We’ve got a good nucleus, and then we have a bunch of young guys who are going...

  • Broncs ready to hit the hardwood

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

It doesn't matter how you start, it's how you finish. If anyone knows that feeling, it is the Burns boys basketball team. Although the season record doesn't reflect a winning year, the Broncs were able to make a finish push toward the state tournament, dropping the opener against Greybull and then ending the season with a loss in the consolation bracket final. “We were able to win a pigtail game, qualify for regionals and we went on a pretty good run at the end of last season,” said head coach Sean Patterson. “We lost in the consolation champ...

  • Lady Broncs are looking for strength in numbers

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

After finishing last season with a 20-7 record and losing in the consolation bracket at the state tournament, Coach Barry Ward sees this coming season as one of change for the Lady Broncs basketball team. “We're going to have a lot of new faces, and a lot of young players will have to step up to fill some vital roles for us. We may have to change our style of play a little bit because we're going to have more size than we've had in the past.” Jessica Malm and Jace Sharpe are the two returning seniors to the squad. “Jessica will obviously be a...

  • Coyotes look to be competitive this season

    Jimmie Earls|Dec 10, 2015

Tim Brunelle is entering his tenth year as the coach of the Pawnee Coyotes boys basketball team. Coming off an 8-12 performance from last season, Brunelle said there are still areas of the game his team needs to improve upon. It’s a trend that he has seen over his tenure at Pawnee High School. “Last year was an improvement over the year before and so on,” he said. “We were playing a lot of sophomores last season and we’re looking to improve on that this coming season.” Injuries are another of Brunelle’s concerns, as well as shoring up hi...
