Last Wednesday Savannah Kirkbride made it official by signing her letter of intent for the Eastern Wyoming College volleyball squad. The Pine Bluffs Hornets JV basketball team played their first tournament of the 2023/24 season over the weekend. The boys looked strong and fast though a bit undisciplined. The first tournament for the Lady JV Hornets basketball team was over last weekend at the Burns Insurance Winter Classic Tournament. The team would face other teams from different and larger schools. Two Pine Bluffs middle school wrestlers qualified for the WAWA (Wyoming Amateur Wrestling Association) Middle School State meet last weekend. Jesse Gortney and Jax Thurin both placed fourth in the state in their weight class. Gortney, who wrestles in the 70 lbs. weight class had to wrestle six matches in order to make the cut. The award shows how outstanding a senior is in the school. This organization is made up of teachers and personnel that have retired. The South East Wyoming Athletic Conference (SEWAC) held their annual wrestling championship tournament last weekend in Burns, Wyoming. There were five teams from the local area that competed in the tournament. Teams from Glenrock, Burns/Pine Bluffs, Lingle/Ft Laramie, Niobrara County and Southeast all sent their best junior high wrestlers to bid for the championship. This was the 2nd Annual Tri-State Border War youth wrestling tournament in Pine Bluffs at the High School gym on Sunday December 3rd. Wrestlers came from all over the area and there were over 270 kids in the open division and 48 in the Girls division that traveled from as far as Casper, Rawlins, Colorado Springs, and Sutherland, NE. The Burns football team held their annual awards ceremony last Monday. The team, coaches, supporters and family members were there to cheer their team on. Jordan Griess who just recently signed with the University of Wyoming to play soccer has a couple more awards to boast about. Griess has been honored as both the All-Conference and the All-State Award recipient for the forward position in soccer. Last year Pine Bluffs Distilling had a keg of whiskey named for local bronc rider Brody Cress. He was a leader in the PRCA saddle bronc riding event and a star of the local community. Cress is from Hillsdale, Wyoming and has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) since 2014. Last Monday on the 6th of November the Burns/Pine Bluffs junior high wrestling team went to the Lingle/Ft Laramie area to compete in the LFL Middle School Dogger Invite. The team did well, and some stars are starting to shine. Volleyball season has come to an exciting end with both local teams making it to the state tournament.
