  • Bringing in the ringers - Horseshoes a game of old and new

    Jim Merryfield|Sep 7, 2023

Horseshoes, pitching shoes or throwing shoes. No matter what you call it, the game has been around for generations. I remember watching my father pitching shoes at the family get togethers. But where it actually started may surprise you. Horseshoes, the game is thought to have been around since the Roman occupation of Britain (1st to 5th century). There is no documentation that the Romans had or even made iron U shaped horseshoes at that time but they did use something. The game may have derived from the game called Quoits. This was an ancient...

  • Horseshoes - A brotherly competition

    Karen Lipska|Aug 31, 2023

Every year everyone tries to beat the Mayor of Grover and his brother at horseshoes. Horseshoes was as popular as corn hole at one time. Everyone had stakes, shovels, and horseshoes at their homes or in their vehicles. It was the thing to do.The game has lost some of its thrill throughout the years except at Grover, Co. There are four sets of horseshoe pits at the park in Grover. Each pit is set up with an enclosed pit and the right amount of dirt/sand in it. Plus for safety issues there is a ba...

  • Cow Tongue not just for nutrition

    Karen Lipska|Aug 24, 2023

Football is a rough and tumble game where a group of people throw and kick a ball across a field. The ball that is used for this game at one time was referred to as a pigskin due to the fact that they were originally inflated with the bladders of animals, including those from swine. However, on Bushnell Day that was no pigskin being tossed around the playing field as they had their first annual Cow Tongue Football games. First you have to wonder why (a cow tongue?) and again exactly how it was...
