LCSD #2 welcomes teachers

The Laramie County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees welcomed some of the new teachers to the district at their meeting Oct. 14.

Each principal took some time and introduced their new teaching staff members with a short history of each teacher for the board.

Chairman Esther Davison thanked the teachers for coming and said she was glad to see the new faces and energy in the district.

Pine Bluffs Elementary Principal Sue Stevens updated the board on the state standards and the work being done by the Subject Area Committee and the Curriculum Coordinating Council. Stevens said the group met that morning and will continue working through Wednesday.

In other business, Business Manager Rob Bryant reported that the district had 957 enrolled as of Oct. 1, which was the same as Sept. 1, but up 19 from last year. Bryant also reminded the board of the Select School Facilities Committee meeting later in the week. The committee would be deciding on the enhancements for the Burns track making it more in line with a 4A standard track rather than a 2A track.

“The School Facilities Commission staff is supportive of our population,” Bryant said. He added he was hopeful the committee would approved the enhancements.

Councilman Tom Morgan said Burns high added 25 to 30 new students this year and hoped the committee looked at the growth when making their decision. The board discussed the differences in grass versus turf on a field, and the expense as well as the additional time students and athletes could use a turf field in the Wyoming weather conditions.

The board later approved Don Smith of AVI as the project representative for the track.

Transportation Supervisor Ross Heinen presented the board with the transportation routes for 2013-2014 school year. He also reminded the board of the bus safety week Oct. 21 through Oct. 25. Heinen explained some of the events the transportation department would be doing.

“We don’t hear much bad things, and that is a good thing,” commended Davison on the positive efforts the transportation department was making.

Before adjourning, Davison reminded the board of the districts’ accreditation visit Oct. 20-24 and wanted to make sure the school board was well represented.

The next meeting will be Monday, November 11 at 7 p.m. at the Albin Elementary School.
