Frigid, that it how it has been all around here for the past week, maybe longer. The chickens do not want to lay and I cant say that I blame them. One of my grandkids came in the other afternoon and was concerned because their nose had frozen shut. Of course us older, wiser folks know that that is a temporary condition, she was not so sure!

My friend in Montana was having -50 degree weather with the wind chill a few days ago, so I guess not too many folks want to hear us whine about waking up to -19. If you were at the Banner County School last Friday you were nice and warm as the basketball games progressively got better as the night wore on.

The final one with the boys varsity had us on the edge of our seats throughout the game. Great job Cats. The teams will compete a few more times before Christmas break and moratorium. This week on Monday, Dec. 16 the high school girls junior varsity (only) will compete against the Gering freshmen Bulldogs here at home at 5 p.m. and the junior high will play Wednesday, Dec. 18 vs. Community Christian again here at home, game time 1 p.m.

The entire varsity basketball team will travel Friday, Dec. 20 for game play at 3:30 p.m. with Leyton. The Banner County School will host varsity wrestling Saturday, Dec. 14. My guess is that the gym will be packed, so come early. The action starts at 9 a.m. That completes this weeks sports calendar, good luck and safe travel.

The annual school Christmas Program will be on Tuesday, Dec. 17 and will begin at 6:30 p.m. K-12. I sincerely hope it warms up so that you may come and watch these students. They have been working very hard. This is your last chance, here in Banner County that is, to take your driver's test this year. An examiner will be at the Banner County Courthouse on Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for your testing pleasure. The elementary students will enjoy spreading some joy as they travel to the valley and do some Christmas caroling Friday, Dec. 20 returning home to be dismissed at 11:50 a.m.

Parents I am sure you are all aware because the kids seem to usually know about these things ... they get pretty excited! This is also the end of the first semester at school. Christmas break will continue until Jan. 7. Woo-hoo, I am excited too!

Speaking of caroling, the Harrisburg Community Church young & old, youth group, and Central -Banner 4-H Club will join forces on Sunday, Dec. 15 and go caroling here around town. Weather permitting. All will enjoy soup, hot chocolate and fellowship after caroling. Kimball has an interesting project going on this year called "Shop With a Cop". It will be held Saturday, Dec. 14 and begins at the fire hall with breakfast.

From there, the kids will go with a cop/safety person to Shopko and shop for their families. Once finished with their shopping, they will return to the fire hall and wrap their purchases. You are encouraged to donate to this event and more information is available at the Kimball Police Department, 235-3608.

Also on that date at the Kimball Public Library, a free movie will be shown 10 a.m.-noon for children ages 5-12. The movie is "The Polar Expres"' and is a few years old, one that will probably be shown every Christmas from now on, great movie. On Saturday, Dec.14 at the Midwest Theater in Scottsbluff, the Sugar Valley Singers will perform their program entitled 'Celebrate Christmas.' These gentlemen are members of the Scottsbluff chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Midwest you may enjoy a free, open to the public sneak preview of the upcoming season of "Downtown Abbey". For more information on this one please call 632-4311. The final event at the Midwest this week , and one I would love to see is on Tuesday, Dec. 17. It is a dance performance "Celtic Cabare"' and is part of the Lied Center program. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is touted as a '"our of Ireland featuring dance by Jill Anderson". Tickets are $18 ( non members) for adults and $15 for students.
