100 years ago

C.E. Carlstrum was attending to business matters at Cheyenne yesterday.

George W. Bremer of Egbert, deputy assessor for this district, has been doing the town this week.

A marriage license was issued Wednesday to George Hartman and Miss Vida Caroline Evans, both of this place.

Chas. Stevens and family arrived here this week from Potter, Nebraska, and will make their home in their building on Elm street.

Mrs. James Wilkinson is at the Cheyenne hospital where she is being treated for injuries received in a mix-up with a maintainer’s speeder several weeks ago.

Louis Jultak, Cheyenne’s popular furrier, is to be at the Standard hotel in Pine Bluffs Saturday, March 18, one day only with a fine line of furs in some of the latest styles, many of which have never before been offered in Wyoming.

Because Night Marshal Fritz Wulf was on the job and promptly reported to the telephone office when he saw flames shooting from a building almost two miles north of town early Monday morning, a family of four is still alive and unhurt after fire destroyed a sod building within a few feet of the house where they were sleeping – unaware of the peril. The family, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Laycock and their two daughters, Marjorie and Dorothy Oglevie, 7 and 9, were sound asleep when volunteer fire department arrived shortly after 4:30.

Two of the bravest women in town this weekend were Mrs. Jack Hilterbrand and Mrs. Woodrow Dotson. These ladies were drivers of cars that took seven girls to the tournament at Torrington Thursday during a ground blizzard. Mrs. Hilterbrand took Joan Hilterbrand, Jo Ann Patton, Peggy Anderson, Joannetta Poelma and stayed until Saturday night. Mrs. Dotson took Bonita Dotson, Terra Meyer and Rose Bragg and returned Saturday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. James E. Powers of Albin will be honored at an open house Sunday, March 22, on their 45th wedding anniversary by their children. The affair will be held at the Richard Larson home between the hours of 2 and 5 p.m.

Department of Environmental Quality – Water Quality Division staff member Carol Pfarr reported to the town that the water samples taken from two wells have tested negatively for possible gasoline contamination from a year-old spill at High Plains Cooperatives service station. Ms. Pfarr stated the water from a well near the old Melodrama Hall and another at the corner of Butler St. and Hwy 30 were analyzed for BETX, benzene, ethyl, torlune and exylene and none of the contaminants were found when the state tested the samples.

The Pine Bluffs girls basketball team will meet Tongue River tonight (Thursday) at 9:30 p.m. in the first round of state finals being played in Riverton. The Hornets, 11-8, are the number two team from the Southeast region after narrowly losing to Lusk 59-56 last Saturday in Torrington.

It has been the dream of Anne Larson’s for some time to expand the services available at the Pine Ranch north of Pine Bluffs to include a handicapped riding program and an equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP) program. Larson discussed the idea with the Pine Bluffs Town Council and asked them to sponsor a feasibility study of the project funded by a Wyoming state Community Development Block grant. The $7,500 grant will be used to hire a firm to study the need of this type of service in the area. Larson must put up 25 percent of the funds for the research and have a sponsoring public agency.

Tired of looking at weeds taking over? Tired of looking at grass that is not healthy? Tired of pesky insects? If so, Todd Thompson just might have the answer you are looking for. Thompson recently purchased the K-Lawn business from Bill Wallace of Kimball and wants to take care of those problems. Thompson bought the business not only to fulfill one of his biggest hobbies, but also to help the surrounding area with lawn problems. “I love doing lawn yard work. I love the outdoors,” said Thompson. Thompson explained that this would give him the opportunity to offer his children summer jobs when they get older and to instill in them the hard work ethic he has, plus other life-long lessons.

Lindsey Graves of Pine Bluffs has been named to the3 President’s Honor Roll at Casper College for the 2003 fall semester. To qualify, a student must take at least 12 hours and receive a grade point average of 3.5 or better.

Dana Mirich and baby Drue returned to their home in Pine Bluffs on Saturday after the baby had undergone treatment at Children’s Hospital in Denver for RSV.

The blizzard of March 1 brought 17 inches of heavy wet snow to LaGrange.

The Pine Bluffs Rest Area and Information Center will be closed for approximately 13 weeks for the renovation and makeover of the facilities.
