Peter Carlson was a hard working farmer near Waverly, Nebraska. He raised corn and put up hay to feed cattle for the Omaha market.
He schemed and toiled early and late, first to raise the feed and then slaved and slopped through mud and snow all winter to feed his steers, fit for the market.
But when he pulled into South Omaha he found the pens full of sleek fat stock from the plains, the mountain slopes of Wyoming.
He tried to sneer at them as grass fed, but all the same, they generally topped the market over his corn-fed steers.
