Walk-in atlas available for hunters

For hunters looking for additional places to hunt this year, the 2015 Walk-in Hunting Atlas is now available on the Wyoming Game and Fish and Department’s website at https://wgfoapps.wyo.gov/plpwhmprogram/frmWalkinHuntingHome.aspx.

The online atlas features hundreds of walk-in areas where hunters can access private lands for a variety of species. The Walk-in program has been responsible for providing more than a million acres of access to hunters annually. It is part of the overall Private Lands Public Wildlife program and is partly funded by donations to Access Yes. Walk-in access is obtained through an agreement with private landowners and the Game and Fish and written approval from the landowner to use these areas is not necessary.

Walk-in areas are available for elk, deer and antelope as well as a variety of upland birds, waterfowl, small game and predators. The Walk-in atlas lists the species that can be hunted within the area and the dates when the walk-in area can be accessed.

The Game and Fish has not produced printed copies of the Walk-in atlas for several years, but the online version contains all of the latest and updated information as the previous printed versions. Walk-in areas are listed on a county by county basis. To find walk-in areas in a given county, click on the desired species on the Walk-in area home page and view the hunt areas where walk-in access is available. Walk-in access is available in 21 of Wyoming’s 23 counties.

Game and Fish reminds hunters that walk-in areas are not the same as other public lands such as national forest or BLM lands where camping, target shooting and other activities are generally permitted. The Game and Fish agreement with the landowner does not include activities other than hunting. Hunters are expected to look at each year’s current atlas to see what is and what is not permitted in the different walk-in areas.
