Sisters Judy Brayton and Joyce Hopkins were born ten months apart and when they were young, their parents split. Brayton remained in Wyoming, while sister Joyce moved away to Norfolk, Virginia.
Brayton grew up in the Sheridan, Wyoming area and after graduating from high school, she headed off to college where she was majoring in physical education.
During her college financial struggles, she talked with a friend, who convinced her to check out the military. At the age of twenty, Brayton enlisted in the U. S. Army. The year was 1963.
