Acclaimed poet Jovan Mays Visits Burns High School

Tuesday, December 19, Burns High School English students learned about poetry from acclaimed poet, motivational speaker, and teacher Jovan Mays. Mays had given the commencement address at Chadron State College Friday, December 15, and offered to visit Deb Nolting’s English classes the morning of his return trip to Aurora, where he resides.

Mays spoke to four classes about poetry, offering five points to consider: 1. Poetry is my own language. 2. Nothing just is. 3. Your page is not a cage. 4. It’s not about the about, it’s about the journey. 5. Imagination restores order.
